Marina Petrillo, giornalista e scrittrice, è stata senior editor di Open Migration e anchor/producer per First Look Media, l'editore fondato a New York da Pierre Omydiar per dare una casa ai materiali scaturiti dalle rivelazioni di Edward Snowden e ai reporter di The Intercept. Blogger dal 2008 e curatrice di citizen journalism dal 2010, è esperta di giornalismo digitale e collaborativo e insegna letteratura della realtà alla Scuola Holden. Ha fatto radio per 25 anni, cominciando con il programma indie Patchanka dove ha intervistato centinaia di musicisti, dagli Afterhours ai Radiohead, e ospitato centinaia di concerti live. Fino al 2014 è stata condirettore di Radio Popolare, dove negli ultimi anni si era occupata di attivismo e mobilitazione comunitaria sui social in Medio Oriente e Stati Uniti, diritti umani, whistleblowing, sorveglianza elettronica, privacy e libertà di espressione. Ha pubblicato tre libri: I muri di Belfast (Costa & Nolan, 1996), sul processo di pace in Irlanda del Nord; Nativo Americano (Feltrinelli, 2010), sul percorso folk e l'attivismo politico di Bruce Springsteen; nel 2021, per il decennale delle primavere arabe, è uscito il suo nuovo libro, Canto la piazza elettrica, un memoir sull’occupazione di piazza Tahrir.

Marina Petrillo is an author, reporter and social journalist. She was senior editor at Open Migration and anchor/producer at First Look Media, the publisher Pierre Omydiar founded in New York to provide a home for Edward Snowden's revelations and reporters at The Intercept. A blogger since 2008 and a citizen journalism curator since 2010, she is an expert on digital and collaborative journalism and she teaches creative nonfiction at Scuola Holden. She was a radio producer and anchor for 25 years, starting with national indie show Patchanka where she interviewed hundreds of musicians, from Afterhours to Radiohead, and hosted hundreds of live shows. Up to 2014 she was co-editor in chief of Radio Popolare, one of the largest community radio stations in Europe, where in the latest years she covered activism and community mobilization on social media in the US and the Middle East, human rights, whistleblowing, electronic surveillance, privacy and freedom of expression. For her work on the Arab Spring, she was listed as one of The Independent’s “eight most influential non-celebrity users of Twitter” in 2011. At First Look Media she received her training on electronic security, privacy and encrypting and she was part of the Reported.ly team, the award-winning, Andy Carvin's-directed project of social journalism, verification and debunking. Reported.ly won the Online News Association award in 2015 for its minute-by-minute coverage and verification of the Charlie Hebdo attack. She was a speaker at the Online News Association annual conferences on citizen journalism, Twitter and Big Tech, and was also a keynote speaker in 2016. Since 2011 she has been a regular speaker at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia. After working as communications officer on Welfare for the City of Milan, she now works at the European parliament, where she is the communications officer of MEP Pierfrancesco Majorino, focusing on foreign policy, Middle East and Turkey, human rights, freedom of the press, foreign interferences in the electoral processes and platforms regulation.
